April Bowers | Magazines & Visual Identity [2023]
When photography is already outstanding, design needs to know when to step into the background. The editorial project for April Wolff was built around this balance of presence without competition and sophistication without excess.
Developed for American photographer April Wolff through KIAI Agency (Canada), this project aimed to organize and showcase her services and portfolio in a printed magazine format, blending visual storytelling with premium brand positioning.
Context
The project was initially planned as three separate publications:
Portrait Menu
Headshot & Personal Brand Menu
Prepayment Bonuses
During development, we realized that the Prepayment Bonuses content could be integrated into the Portrait Menu to create a more strategic and cohesive structure. The main goal was to transform commercial information, such as pricing, service descriptions, and benefits, into an editorial experience that matched the high aesthetic quality of her photographic work.
Challenge
The biggest challenge was creating a design that matched the quality of the photographs without competing with them.
April shared a large collection of images, all visually striking. The image selection became a strategic process, focusing not only on the most beautiful photos but also on those that helped build the magazine's visual story.
The project needed to communicate:
Sophistication
Clarity
A strong commercial structure
Timeless elegance
All while keeping the photography as the main focus.

Typography Direction
The typography needed to complement the aesthetic quality of the photographs without making the layouts feel heavy. The choice was Prata, a sophisticated serif font with a strong fashion editorial feel.
As a side note, if the name Prada weren't already trademarked, this typeface could easily pass for it because it carries that exact same sense of elegance.
Color Direction
Black and white were natural choices for this project since many of the photo sessions featured dark backgrounds. Black worked almost as an extension of the images, creating visual consistency throughout the magazine without competing with the photography. To balance the layouts and keep them from feeling too heavy, white was used to provide breathing room and contrast.
The aged gold tone was selected as a smart alternative to metallic finishes. April Wolff wanted a sophisticated golden aesthetic, but using special printing effects would have increased production costs considerably. Instead, we chose a warm, elegant shade that conveyed the same sense of luxury in a much more practical and cost-effective way.

The Portrait Menu is the project's main editorial piece, created to present and promote April Wolff's photography services in a more sophisticated way. It showcases different photography experiences, image collections, albums, fine art prints, and wall art, all organized within a premium editorial structure. The goal was to transform what would normally be a simple pricing guide into an elegant and emotional visual experience, highlighting the quality of the photography while strengthening the brand's positioning.
The Prepayment Bonuses section was designed as a strategic offer for clients who chose to pay in advance. Depending on the amount invested, clients could receive additional products, prints, or exclusive bonuses. During development, this content was integrated into the Portrait Menu to create a cohesive and seamless experience within the main publication.
Portrait Menu

The Headshot & Personal Branding Menu was created to showcase April Wolff's professional photography services focused on personal positioning and brand building. The publication features various headshot and personal branding packages, offering experiences that range from quick sessions to full productions for professionals, artists, and entrepreneurs looking to strengthen their visual presence.
